![]() ![]() According to Mental Floss Magazine (and our own interviews with Moore), Jordan was ready to pack up and go in deep with Moore/ Kilgore but was convinced to say after a last-ditch meeting during which Hatfield’s design for the Jordan III was unveiled. Where was His-Airness headed? Off to partner with Peter Moore and Nike’s first marketing guru, Bruce Kilgore, on a new sneaker company - Van Grack. ![]() The III is the sneaker that saved Nike after Hatfield’s then-unconventional design won Jordan over just as he was contemplating leaving the company. And without a doubt, the III was his coming-out party. He’s the designer behind many of Nike’s most beloved kicks outside of the Air Jordan brand and his fingerprint is seen everywhere in the sneaker world. In the sneaker community, Hatfield’s name is almost as big as MJ’s (okay, not really but… kinda okay, not kinda, but… he’s big). What makes this sneaker particularly special is that the III represents the start of the Tinker Hatfield-era of the Jordan brand and, with all due respect to Peter Moore (who designed the Jordan I and II), the brand is defined by Hatfield’s touch - even if it’ll always be indebted to the late Moore’s initial vision. Sharp-eyed observers may also note that the underside of Mars’ hat reads “Cannes” instead of “Brooklyn,” and his shirt says “President Mars.” On the right shoe, Spike is shown in the purple suit he wore to the Oscars in 2020 to pay tribute to the late Kobe Bryant. The left shoe’s tag shows a classic shot of Mars Blackmon, altered to match the colors of the French flag. Though the color scheme may be bright and bold, the shoe’s signature detail is undeniably its unique tongue tags. Showcased by PE collector and seller English Sole, Lee’s Cannes Film Festival Air Jordan 1 is done up in white, blue and red suede and leather for a nod to the colors of the French flag. Since then, Lee has received many a PE (player edition) sneaker from Jordan Brand, and the latest to surface is an Air Jordan 1 designed for the 2020 installment of the Cannes Film Festival - where Lee was set to serve as the jury president before COVID-19 necessitated the event’s cancellation. Spike Lee has been an official Jordan Brand family member since 1988, when, as Mars Blackmon, he hawked the Air Jordan 3 in the first of many legendary Spike-and-Mike Air Jordan commercials. ![]()
